Eco-friendly sliding windows: what is real and what is marketing

Every window manufacturer in the last five years has added “eco-friendly” somewhere to their marketing. Some of those claims are backed by real data: third-party verified Environmental Product Declarations, measurable recycled content, glass coatings that genuinely cut cooling loads. Others are marketing copy with a green leaf logo and nothing behind it.

Marketing claims that sound green but rarely mean much:

“Eco-friendly” with no specifics. Real environmental claims come with documentation: recycled content percentages, Environmental Product Declarations, third-party certifications. The word “eco-friendly” on its own is decorative.

“Natural” framing materials. Solid timber sliding windows in Jamaican coastal humidity are not a sustainable choice; they need replacement faster, get treated with chemical preservatives, and have higher lifecycle impact than properly-specified aluminum despite the natural-material framing.

“Made with sustainable practices.” Almost meaningless unless the practices are specified and audited. Ask which practices, by which standard, audited by whom.

“Recyclable” without recycling infrastructure. Vinyl frames are technically recyclable; in Jamaica, the infrastructure to actually recycle them at end of life is essentially nonexistent. So they go to landfill regardless of the label.

How to verify the real claims

When a supplier says their product is eco-friendly, ask for one or more of:

  • Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for the specific product
  • Recycled content percentage with third-party verification
  • NFRC, BFRC, or ENERGY STAR rating for the glass and frame combination
  • Statement of end-of-life recyclability with specific routing in Jamaica
  • Documentation of any certifications claimed (Cradle to Cradle, GreenGuard, etc.)

A reputable supplier will produce these documents. A marketing-only supplier will redirect or change the subject. That tells you what you need to know.
