Working with your architect on shower enclosure specifications
A bathroom is one of the smallest rooms in a house and one of the most complicated. Three trades, two services, code requirements, drainage, ventilation, and a finish-level expectation usually higher than any other room in the home. The shower enclosure sits at the centre of all that, and the architect is the person who has to make it fit on paper before anyone swings a hammer.
If you are designing or renovating a home in Jamaica and working with an architect, here is how the shower enclosure spec should flow between you, the architect, and the installer.
What goes on the architect’s drawings
A shower enclosure deserves more than a rectangle on the floor plan with the word “shower” inside it. At a minimum, the drawings should show the internal dimensions measured from finished wall to finished wall, the location and swing direction of the door, the fixed panel arrangement in plan and elevation, the glass thickness and tempering standard, the hardware finish, any privacy treatment (clear, acid-etched, sandblasted, smart film), the drain location and type (linear or centre), the slope direction and degree of the shower floor, and the waterproof membrane extent. We recommend membrane to ceiling for any wet area.
On a residential project, those details usually fit on a single A3 sheet pulled out of the bathroom set, with a plan view, two elevations, and a section through the shower stall. On a commercial or strata project, the same information might be split across several sheets and a separate specification document.
Who decides what
The split of responsibility usually works like this.
The homeowner decides the overall look, the privacy preference, the hardware finish, and the budget envelope. They also have the final say on door swing direction once the architect explains the options.
The architect decides the dimensions, the layout, the glass spec, the drain type, the membrane requirements, and how the bathroom integrates with the rest of the home. They translate the homeowner’s preferences into a buildable, code-compliant design.
The installer (us, on the projects we work) advises on hardware availability, lead times, what works in the local climate, and what specs cause maintenance issues we have seen on past jobs. We do not change the design unilaterally. We flag issues to the architect and let them decide.
When this split works smoothly, everyone gets a result they can live with. When it breaks down, the usual symptom is the architect specifying something that is not available locally, the installer arriving with a different alloy or hardware finish, and an awkward three-way conversation about who pays for the substitution.
When to involve the installer
The earlier the better, with one caveat. We do not need to be on every meeting from the kickoff. What we do need is a 30-minute call or site visit during the design development phase, before the drawings are issued for tender. At that meeting we look at the bathroom layout, the proposed enclosure spec, and any environmental factors (coastal, hurricane exposure, traffic level for commercial projects). We give feedback on what is buildable, what the lead times are, and what we would change.
Architects who have worked with us before know to ping us during design development. Architects new to working with a local glass installer often skip this step and assume any spec they draw can be sourced. That is true for the common standard kit. It is much less true for specialty finishes, custom-sized panels, or specific marine-grade hardware that may have a 12-week import lead time we should flag while there is still room in the schedule.
Common spec issues we flag
These are the recurring conversations we have with architects on Jamaican projects.
Door swing direction. The drawings often show an inward swing because it makes the floor plan look cleaner. The code requires an outward swing in commercial installs and we strongly recommend it on residential too. Flagging this in design development saves a redraw later.
Hinge mounting blocking. A frameless install needs solid backing in the wall where the hinges mount. If the framing has not been specified to include this blocking, the install becomes much more complicated. We catch this in design development by reading the wall section.
Glass within 60 inches of the shower waterline. Mirrors, glass partitions, and decorative panels within this radius all need to be tempered safety glass. Architects sometimes spec architectural mirrors that are not safety-rated. We flag this for a swap.
Linear drain orientation. The linear drain works best when oriented perpendicular to the entry path. Some plans show it parallel, which works less well in peak use. We suggest a swap when we see it.
Marine grade for any coastal project. If the home is within two miles of the coast, hardware must be 316 stainless or better. Architects on inland projects sometimes spec 304 from habit. We flag the upgrade.
How to brief your architect for the shower
If you are a homeowner about to brief your architect, give them these things up front.
Your overall budget range for the bathroom and the rough share you expect to spend on the shower enclosure specifically.
Your environment: coastal, inland, hurricane exposure, anything unusual about the site.
Your use pattern: family bathroom, master en-suite, guest, daily intensive or occasional.
Your privacy preference: open clear glass, etched, curtained, smart film.
Your finish preference: brushed nickel, brushed brass, black, polished chrome.
Any disability or accessibility considerations for current or future occupants.
Whether you have an installer in mind, or want the architect to recommend one.
With those seven items, your architect can produce a spec on the drawings that a competent installer can build directly. Without them, you will end up with several rounds of clarification mid-project, which adds time and confusion to a renovation that already has plenty.
