The recent improvements: SageGlass’s RealTone technology cut the characteristic blue hue that made earlier electrochromic glass look weird when tinted. New titanium-oxide and aluminum-ion formulations from university research have brought manufacturing cost down (slowly working its way into commercial product). Patent activity is heavy, which usually predicts price drops 3 to 5 years out.
For a Jamaican home today, electrochromic glass is still premium-only. The glass alone runs $50 to $150 USD per square foot before frame, install, and controls. That makes it a feature on luxury projects rather than a default option. Worth knowing about. Not worth specifying for an average home in 2026.
Slimmer frame profiles are now mainstream
What was novel five years ago (1-inch-wide aluminum frame profiles on sliding patio doors) is now standard from most reputable suppliers. Slim frames let the glass do the visual work and make rooms feel more open.
The Jamaican-relevant version of this trend: it’s available without paying the imported-premium price. Local suppliers (us included) carry slim-profile systems as standard product now, not as custom upgrades.
The catch is that slim frames have to be designed for the actual wind load they’re carrying. A 1-inch profile on a hurricane-rated coastal sliding door has to be engineered for that specific use. Cheap imitations exist that look slim but fail under storm load. Always verify the system has been rated for the conditions, not just designed to look modern.
Frameless flush interior doors are getting easier to install
Flush-mount frameless glass doors (the door is part of the wall surface, no visible frame) used to require highly specialised install crews. The hardware has matured enough that most experienced glass installers can now do these reliably on residential projects.
Useful for Jamaican premium interior work, especially office partitions and high-end residential interior doors where the seamless look matters.

Photovoltaic glass that generates electricity. Real product, but the energy yield per square foot is too low to justify the cost premium over solar panels installed conventionally.
Self-cleaning glass. The coating exists. Performance under heavy Jamaican rain and dust is modest. Most homeowners would not notice the difference enough to justify the cost.
Curved electrochromic. Coming, but not yet at a residential price point.
Holographic display integration. A real lab demonstration. Not yet a product.
For all of these, the right move is “wait 5 years and re-evaluate.” None solves a problem that existing tech can’t already address.
