ASTM E1996 sets the criteria for which products qualify in which exposure zones. Different geographic zones face different windborne debris risks, and the standard sorts products into the right buckets.
In Miami-Dade and Broward counties in Florida (which set the most aggressive hurricane standards in North America), additional Florida Building Code testing is required: TAS 201 for impact, TAS 202 for static pressure, TAS 203 for cyclic pressure. A door with Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance (NOA) has passed the most rigorous testing available anywhere in the world.
For Jamaica, products meeting ASTM E1886/E1996 or Miami-Dade NOA are the realistic premium standard. Products with neither are unrated, and they shouldn’t be specified where storm protection actually matters.
How impact-rated doors are built
The construction is genuinely different from standard residential in a few specific ways.
The glass is laminated tempered: two panes of tempered glass bonded with a PVB interlayer. When debris hits, the outer pane may shatter, but the PVB holds the fragments in place. The opening doesn’t fail. The home stays sealed.
The frame is thicker, built with reinforcement details to handle the wind pressure. Standard residential aluminum frames flex too much under hurricane pressure and either deform permanently or pull away from the wall.
The hardware is sized for the actual wind loads. Single-point latches don’t hold under hurricane pressure, period. Multi-point locks with three or more engagement points are the realistic minimum.
The frame-to-wall anchoring is specified to the design wind pressure, with stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized anchors at engineered spacing. Standard residential anchoring fails at much lower pressures than hurricane spec demands.
The seal system uses high-performance gaskets and silicones rated for storm exposure. Standard residential weatherstripping just doesn’t have the compression durability to seal reliably through a sustained storm.
What hurricane-rated doors don’t do
Even the best hurricane-rated glass door has real limits.
Direct strikes from very large debris (a falling tree limb, an unsecured vehicle) can break almost any glass door regardless of rating. Hurricane-rated means the door survives the realistic windborne debris the standard test simulates. It doesn’t mean indestructible.
Sustained Category 5 conditions exceed the design tolerances of most residential ratings. The standards are calibrated to common storm conditions, not to the extreme high end of what a Cat 5 can throw at a building.
Hurricane rating doesn’t fully prevent water intrusion in extreme conditions. The standards focus on structural envelope integrity rather than on keeping every drop of water out under wind-driven rain.
For beachfront homes facing the most aggressive exposure, layering hurricane-rated glass behind storm shutters is still the highest-protection configuration. Hurricane rating alone isn’t the same as belt-and-braces.
Older doors that aren’t rated
Most pre-2010 residential glass doors in Jamaica weren’t installed to current hurricane standards. The standards existed, but cost-conscious residential construction often used non-rated products, particularly on smaller homes.
For an existing home with non-rated glass doors, there are a few realistic paths.

Plywood boarding before specific storms is the traditional Jamaican approach. 3/4-inch plywood pre-cut to the openings, attached with anchors before a storm and removed after. Labour-intensive but effective for occasional use.
The fourth option is accepting the risk and hoping. It’s the default on a lot of homes. It works fine until it doesn’t.
For coastal homes especially, the math usually favours rated replacement over time. Each major storm creates risk; over a 20-year ownership period, the probability of at least one significant event is high.

Pre-season checklist (May to early June)
Run through this before hurricane season officially starts.
Visually inspect all glass doors. Look for chips, cracks, or visible damage in the glass. Check for loose hardware, any frame movement, sealing failures, visible gaps.
Functional check on every door. All locks engage cleanly. All multi-point gear actuates. All doors close and seal properly. Any door that needs forcing should be serviced before the season, not during.

Pre-cut materials. If you’re using plywood boarding for non-rated doors, the plywood should already be cut to size, the anchors already pre-installed, the materials already stored where you can grab them. Cutting plywood the day a storm is forecast is too late.
Documentation. Photos of each glass door’s current condition. Useful for insurance claims if damage happens.
What to do when a storm is forecast
Tropical storm or hurricane watch (storm possible within 48 hours):
- Final visual check of all doors and locks
- Clear the immediate exterior area around glass doors of anything that could become a projectile (furniture, planters, garden tools)
- Confirm storm shutters are accessible and operational
- Charge devices in case power goes
- Stock water and supplies as normal
Tropical storm or hurricane warning (conditions expected within 36 hours):
- Install storm shutters on all openings
- Deploy plywood boarding on non-rated doors
- Lock all glass doors with multi-point engaged

During the storm:
